Dr. Ying Hei Chui Professor, University of Alberta

Dr. Chui is a Professor and the Nasseri Senior University of Alberta Engineering Research Chair in Advanced Wood Construction. In addition to his role as the Principal Investigator of this research program, he also serves as the administrator and chief scientific officer, overseeing both the scientific and administrative aspects of this program.

Dr. Zhou, Lina Assistant Professor, University of Victoria (UVic)

Dr. Zhou is an Assistant Professor with expertise in lateral load performance of light wood frame systems.

Dr. Mukhopadhyaya, Phalguni Professor, University of Victoria (UVic)

Dr. Mukhopadhyaya is a Professor and expert in durability and thermal performance of wood building envelope.

Dr. Yang, Tony Professor, University of British Columbia (UBC)

Dr. Yang is a Professor and co-leader of Theme 1. He is a renowned expert in seismic performance and performance-based design of structural systems, and a member of the NBCC Standing Committee on Earthquake Design (SCED).

Dr. Lam, Frank Professor, University of British Columbia (UBC)

Dr. Lam is a Professor and Sr. Chair in Wood Building Design and Construction. Dr. Lam is a member of CSA O86 TC. He is an expert in timber connections, structural performance, and structural reliability of wood systems.

Dr. Loss, Cristiano Assistant Professor, University of British Columbia (UBC)

Dr. Loss recently joined UBC as an Assistant Professor and is Associate Chair in Wood Building Design and Construction. His expertise is in timber connections and lateral performance of mass timber systems.

Dr. Tu, Qingshi Assistant Professor, University of British Columbia (UBC)

Dr. Tu is Assistant Professor and a member of UBC’s Sustainable Bioeconomy Research Group, as well as an expert in life cycle analysis.

Dr. Tesfamariam, Solomon Professor, University of British Columbia (UBC)

Dr. Tesfamariam is Professor and Tier 1 Principal’s Research Chair. He is an expert in seismic engineering and wood–steel hybrid systems.

Dr. Tannert, Thomas Professor, University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC)

Dr. Tannert is a Professor, Tier 2 CRC, and BC Leadership Chair in Tall Wood and Hybrid Structures Engineering. He is a timber engineering expert with expertise in connections and timber–concrete systems. Dr. Tannert is a member of CSA O86 TC.

Dr. Zhou, Jianhuij Assistant Professor, University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC)

Dr. Zhou is an Assistant Professor His expertise is in dynamic and acoustic performance of timber components and systems. He recently established a vibration and acoustics testing lab at UNBC.

Dr. Wimmers, Guido Associate Professor, University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC)

Dr. Wimmers is an Associate Professor His expertise is in wood building physics and energy performance, and he has played a key role in advancing the Passive House standard in Canada.

Dr. Chen, Yuxiang Associate Professor, University of Alberta (UAlberta)

Dr. Chen is an Associate Professor His expertise is in building physics and renewable energy for buildings.

Dr. Al-Hussein, Mohamed Professor, University of Alberta (UAlberta)

Dr. Al-Hussein is a Professor and NSERC Industrial Research Chair in the Industrialization of Building Construction. He is a well-known expert in industrialized construction and factory-based manufacturing of building components and assemblies.

Dr. Salem, Sam Associate Professor, Lakehead University (LakeheadU)

Dr. Salem is an Associate Professor and an expert in fire safety engineering, including modelling and fire resistance testing of building members and assemblies. He established a fire testing lab that will be accessed by graduate students in Theme 2.

Dr. Weckman, Beth Professor, University of Waterloo (UWaterloo)

Dr. Weckman is co-leader of Theme 2. She is a Professor in fire engineering and a member of UWaterloo’s world-renowned Fire Research Facilities. Her expertise is in fire dynamics, fire safety engineering, and risk assessment.

Dr. Lacroix, Daniel Assistant Professor, University of Waterloo (UWaterloo)

Dr. Lacroix is an Assistant Professor with expertise in wood mechanics and blast performance of wood structures.

Dr. Doudak, Ghasan Professor, University of Ottawa (UOttawa)

Dr. Doudak is Professor and is a well-known expert in timber engineering, with expertise in lateral performance and blast performance of timber structural systems. Dr. Doudak is active in codes and standards development and is currently Vice-Chair of the NBCC Standing Committee on Structural Design and CSA O86 TC.

Dr. Erochko, Jeffrey Associate Professor, Carleton University (CarletonU)

Dr. Erochko is an Associate Professor with expertise in earthquake engineering and steel–timber hybrid connection systems.

Dr. Hamzeh, Hajiloo Assistant Professor, Carleton University (CarletonU)

Dr. Hamzeh recently joined CarletonU as an Assistant Professor His expertise is in fire safety engineering and resiliency of steel structures. He will apply these skills in analyzing timber systems as part of the proposed research.

Dr. Cruickshank, Cynthia Professor, Carleton University (CarletonU)

Dr. Cruickshank is a Professor and Dir. of the Centre for Advanced Building Envelope Research (CU-CABER). Her research focuses on the optimization of advanced building energy systems for buildings, including energy-efficient insulation materials, solar-assisted heat pumps, and thermal storage.

Dr. Gales, John Assistant Professor, York University (YorkU)

Dr. Gales is an Assistant Professor in fire engineering. He is a member of the NBCC Standing Committee on Fire Protection. Dr. Gales’ primary expertise is in resilient structural fire design, and human behaviour in emergency situations.

Dr. Ge, Hua Associate Professor, Concordia University (ConcordiaU)

Dr. Ge is co-leader for Theme 3. She is an Associate Professor and Concordia University Research Chair in High Performance Building Envelope for Climate Resilient Buildings. Her research focuses on high-performance and durable building envelopes and building envelope design for future climates.

Dr. Wang, Liangzhu Associate Professor, Concordia University (ConcordiaU)

Dr. Wang is an Associate Professor and University Research Chair in Building Airflow and Thermal Management. His areas of expertise include building airflow, thermal management, and CFD applied to building envelope design.

Dr. Ménard, Sylvain Professor, Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQaC)

Dr. Ménard is a Professor in timber structures. His primary research expertise is in the vibration and acoustic performance of wood systems and engineered wood products.

Dr. Blanchet, Pierre Professor, Université Laval (ULaval)

Dr. Blanchet is co-leader for Theme 4. He is a Professor and NSERC IRC in Eco-Responsible Wood Construction. His expertise is in eco-design of buildings, wood construction, and sustainability of materials and buildings.

Dr. Salenikovich, Alex Professor, Université Laval (ULaval)

Dr. Salenikovich is Professor in timber engineering. He is a well-known expert in timber connection and structural performance of timber systems, and a member of CSA O86 TC.

Dr. Gosselin, Louis Professor, Université Laval (ULaval)

Dr. Gosselin is a Professor with specialization in HVAC and envelope performance, as well as renewable energy in buildings.

Dr. Lehoux, Nadia Professor, Université Laval (ULaval)

Dr. Lehoux is a Professor and Assistant Dir. of the Centre Interuniversitaire de Recherche sur es Réseaux d’Entreprise, la Logistique et le Transport. Her expertise is in supply chain planning and coordination and business modelling and optimization.

Dr. Thiffault, Évelyne Assistant Professor, Université Laval (ULaval)

Dr. Thiffault is an Assistant Professor and Scientific Dir. of Forêt Montmorency. One of her research focus areas is in renewable materials.

Dr. Dagenais, Christian Adjunct Professor, Université Laval (ULaval)

Dr. Dagenais is an Adjunct Professor at ULaval and Proj. Leader at FPInnovations. He is one of Canada’s leading experts in structural performance of wood structural members during fire, and an active member of CSA O86 TC and ISO TC 92 Fire Safety.

Dr. Bezabeh, Matiyas Assistant Professor, McGill University

Dr. Bezabeh specializes in timber and timber-hybrid structures for earthquakes and strong winds, having coordinated wind design solutions for complex buildings. His research drives resilient urban development via tall timber buildings, focusing on performance-based wind and seismic design, self-centering systems, and inelastic response.

Dr. Hossein Daneshvar Assistant Professor, University of Alberta

Dr. Daneshvar’s research focuses on resilient structural systems, including hybrid timber-steel and timber-concrete structures. His expertise encompasses performance-based seismic design, evaluation of timber braced frames, and timber-concrete composite systems.

Dr. Felix Wiesner Assistant Professor, University of British Columbia

Dr. Wiesner is an expert in fire safety engineering with a focus on the fire performance of timber buildings and infrastructure. His research includes large-scale compartment fire tests to assess fire dynamics in engineered timber buildings and their structural response, considering fire safety within the context of wood product durability and service life.

Dr. Vinny Gupta Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering

Dr. Gupta specializes in large-scale fire dynamics, with research interests in fire dynamics, compartment fires, flame spread, and fire suppression. His work also explores modern building fire safety challenges and emerging technologies such as lithium-ion batteries and hydrogen. Dr. Gupta is currently a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Sydney and a lecturer at the University of Queensland. He earned his PhD in Fire Safety Engineering from the University of Queensland in 2021 and his BEng in Mechanical Engineering from the same institution in 2015.

Dr. Marjan Popovski Lead Scientist, Building Systems, FPInnovations

Dr. Popovski is a Lead Scientist in the Building Systems Group at FPInnovations and an Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia and the University of Northern British Columbia. With 35 years of experience, he specializes in the structural and seismic performance of mass timber buildings. He has authored over 180 publications and contributed to significant guides such as the Canadian CLT Handbook and the Canadian Technical Guide for Tall Wood Buildings. Dr. Popovski has also been involved in various technical committees, including the National Building Code of Canada Standing Committee on Earthquake Design and ISO TC 165.

Jieying Wang Scientist, FPInnovations

Jieying Wang is a Scientist at FPInnovations specializing in advanced building systems. With expertise in building materials, sustainable construction, and nondestructive testing, Jieying has authored numerous publications on topics like mass timber structures, moisture impact, and building durability. Her work includes field studies and theoretical research contributing to advancements in wood construction. Jieying’s research aims to improve building performance and sustainability in various climate conditions.

Sylvain Gagnon Manager, Building Systems – FPInnovations

Sylvain Gagnon, P.Eng., is the Manager of Building Systems at FPInnovations in Québec. With a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Université Laval, Sylvain has been with FPInnovations since 2003, focusing on wood design and structural engineering for non-residential and multifamily buildings. His extensive experience includes roles in consulting engineering, project management, and quality assurance. Sylvain is also a prolific contributor to key publications such as the Canadian CLT Handbook and the Technical Guide for the Design and Construction of Tall Wood Buildings in Canada. He has been involved in major industry projects and standards development, including the National Building Code of Canada.
