Seminar Details:
- Date: Monday, October 28th, 2024
- Time: 11 am PT/ 12 pm MT/ 2 pm ET
- Duration: 1 hour
- Topic: Design of Connections for Mass Timber Structures
- Zoom Meeting Link: Zoom Meeting Link
- Poster: Attached for reference.
Seminar Overview:
The presentation will explore the key elements of connection design in mass timber construction, beginning with a historical context of timber construction and moving into the current general requirements. Critical connection systems with Dowel-type fasteners, self-tapping screws, and bonded-in rods will be discussed in depth, with a focus on challenges like hydrogen embrittlement. Special emphasis will be placed on the use of glued-in rods, particularly their development and application in the former USSR and Russia. The session will conclude by highlighting contemporary practices and emerging trends that are driving the future of connection design in mass timber structures.
About Dr. Alexander Salenikovich:
Dr. Alexander Salenikovich is Professor of Wood Engineering in the Department of Wood and Forest Sciences at Laval University. His expertise lies in the design of wood structures that withstand high winds and seismic forces, with a particular focus on timber connections, including structural screws and glued-in rods. He has authored over 120 journal and conference papers and edited the proceedings of the 2014 World Conference on Timber Engineering. In recognition of his significant contributions to the field, Dr. Salenikovich was awarded ASTM International’s prestigious Award of Merit in 2023. He is an active member of numerous professional committees and currently serves as Chair of Fastening Subcommittee of CSA O86, Vice-Chair of ASTM International’s D7 Committee on Wood and Vice-Chair of the ANSI/APA PRG-320 Standard Committee on Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT).
