HQP Seminar XXI: Timber-Steel Composite Beams

By Dr. Joshua Woods, Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering, Queen’s University

SEMINAR OVERVIEW

This seminar will delve into the exciting field of hybrid timber-steel construction, which combines the inherent strength of steel with the lightweight and biophilic properties of timber. This innovative structural solution offers an efficient and aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional steel-concrete composite systems.
Dr. Joshua Woods will present the latest research on timber-steel composite beams, focusing on the testing of large-scale CLT-steel beams, different connection methods to achieve composite action, and the development of design procedures using self-tapping screws as shear connectors. The seminar will also explore the use of advanced technologies such as digital image correlation and distributed fibre optic strain sensing to better understand the performance of these composite beams.
