We are pleased to extend a cordial invitation to our next seminar, HQP Seminar IX, the details of which are outlined below:
Seminar Details:
- Date: Thursday, May 30th, 2024
- Time: 11:00 am PT, 12:00 pm MT, 2:00 pm ET
- Duration: 1 hour (50 minutes + 10 Q&A)
- Zoom Meeting Link: Zoom Meeting Link (Poster attached for reference)
Seminar Overview:
Net zero carbon emission is the new target for a sustainable built environment and requires concrete and timely actions among different professional bodies in our community. The current focus is on better buildings using common materials and on the development of new products and advanced building technologies. In this talk, new design strategies for multi-story residential buildings will be presented, combining wood and steel elements. Both hybrid and composite flooring systems and their components will be reviewed, providing alternative methods, including connection solutions that can maximize the speed of construction and overall structural performance and ease offsite manufacturing costs. Results obtained from a comprehensive multi-year study, which includes tests on full-scale elements, as well as their subcomponents and connections under different loading scenarios, will be discussed and summarized. The closing segment of the talk will step into design and technical aspects that require further studies.
About Dr. Cristiano Loss:
Dr.Cristiano Loss is an Assistant Professor in the Wood Science Department at the University of British Columbia (UBC), specializing in sustainable structural systems with an emphasis on high-performance hybrid wood-based structures and performance-based optimum design procedures for a resilient built environment. Dr.Loss completed his master’s structural engineering program and obtained his Ph.D. in Engineering of Civil and Mechanical Structural Systems at the University of Trento, Italy. Before joining UBC, Dr. Loss worked with the Wood Design Engineering Research Group at the University of Northern British Columbia and other research laboratories in Europe. Dr. Loss has an outstanding knowledge of wood in structural engineering, having conducted research within several multi-disciplinary research projects supported through funding programs in Europe, Canada, and Australia. He is a voting member in several subcommittees of the ASTM-D07, a designated member in two subcommittees of the CSA-O86 Canadian Standard, and a member of many International Scientific Committees, including the World Conference on Timber Engineering. Among successful knowledge transfers from academia to industry, he has been granted several patents.
